Permits requested at the INM


Procedures that foreign nationals must complete at the National Immigration Institute to request work permits and exit and re-entry permits, based on the conditions of their stay and the applicable procedures, and in accordance with the requirements and documentation that must be submitted in each case.            

  • Application

    Format to request immigration stay procedure, filled out electronically through the website, printed and with the autograph signature of the petitioner.

    Important:

    In the case of minors under 18 years of age, the application form must be signed by the mother, father or whoever exercises parental authority, guardianship or curatorship.

    • Fill in the information, selecting the type of procedure and modality:
    • What would you like to do?
      Exit and return permit.
      Get permission to work.
    • Select:
      Obtain work permit with employer.
      Obtain work permit (independent activities/self-employment).

    Note: The documents attached to meet the requirements must be listed and written down in the comments section of the application form.
  • Requirements

    The documents (applications) for the procedures must be submitted in original only, and their annexes, in copy. If the interested party requires an acknowledgement of receipt, she/he must attach a copy for that purpose. (Article 15 A section I of the Administrative Procedure Federal Act).

    I. Work PERMIT

    Applicable to foreign nationals with temporary residence or temporary student residence who wish to work in the country, in order to obtain a work permit from the INM, which will be noted on their new immigration document if the application is approved.

    1. Valid temporary resident or student temporary resident card. Original.
    2. Proof of the payment of fees, in accordance with the Federal Act on Fees and other applicable legal provisions for the issuance of the work permit. Original and copy.
    3. Apply for a work permit proving one of the following cases:

    a) Letter of job offer on the letterhead of a natural or legal person indicating the activity to be carried out, required temporality, place of work and the data of the employer's registration certificate duly updated. Original.

    b) In case of independent activities, you must attach:

    • Letter under oath to tell the truth in which he states the occupation to which he will dedicate himself and the place in which he will carry out the activities of his occupation. Original.

    • Proof of registration in the Federal Taxpayer Registry. Copy.

    4. The temporary resident student, in addition to the requirements foreseen in numbers 1, 2 and 3a, must present an original letter of conformity from the corresponding educational institution. The above, as long as he/she is pursuing higher education, postgraduate studies and research and the occupation he/she intends to carry out is related to the subject of his/her studies. Original.
    5. In the case of persons over fifteen and under eighteen years of age, they must additionally show the permits or authorizations provided for in the labour regulations. Original.

    Important:

    • The work permit for a temporary resident student is only applicable when he/she has a job offer and not for independent activities.
    • In the event of renewing the corresponding immigration document, it will not be renewed for the work permit, but must prove the assumption for which the condition of stay was originally authorized.
    • The immigration document will be issued for the original period that it had been issued.

    II. Exit and RETURN PERMIT

    Applicable to the foreign person who needs to leave the national territory and return from it, when they have a process pending resolution that has not caused status, except for the procedures to regularize their migratory situation.

    1. Application form for the pending procedure. (Proof of registration of the application indicating your Unique Procedure Number-NUT) Copy.
    2. Proof of the payment of fees, in accordance with the Federal Act on Fees and other applicable legal provisions for the issuance of the exit and return permit. Original and copy.
    3. A photograph (size 2.5 x 3 cm), front view, white background, with forehead and ears uncovered, without earrings or glasses. Snapshots will not be accepted. Color photographs are recommended. Original.
    4. If you apply for the procedure in an international port of entry/leaving, through you leave the national territory, you must present: Evidence or writing with which you accredit or manifest causes of force majeure. Original.

    Exceptions are made for procedures related to the regularization of immigration status in cases involving family unity, humanitarian reasons, expired documents, or unauthorized activities.

  • Duty Payment

    I. Work PERMIT

    • Payment of fee for receiving and processing the application and, where appropriate, for authorization of work permit.
      • A Temporary resident $4,341.00 MXN
      • A Temporary resident student $4,341.00 MXN

    II. Exit and RETURN PERMIT

    • Payment of fee for receiving and processing the application and, where appropriate, for issuance of the exit and return Permit $591.00 MXN

    Important:

    Payments can be made through the following means:

    1. At the Office for processing payments with Visa or MasterCard credit or debit cards
    2. Through a help sheet which must be filled out according to the following specifications:
    • Verify that it corresponds to the type of procedure requested.
    • Register exactly the full first and last names used to identify the foreign national in the application. (Regardless of the number of names and surnames).
    • In the case of minors, the payment must be registered with the names and surnames of the minors.
    The INM does not accept cash payments.

    It is suggested to thoroughly review the payment receipts issued by banking institutions, in order to ensure there are no errors in the person's identification data.

  • Follow-up Procedure

    If your application was pending on the day it was submitted, you will be able to track it with the email address you entered on the application, have your application number and password that was sent to you electronically at hand.
